I agree that using QADBXREF would reduce the number of CASE situations on
file objects.

I think one pass on the object, such as the open list of objects API at:
http://www-01.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/ssw_ibm_i_72/apis/qgyolobj.htm?lang=en
would be sufficient for most objects. Using another pass to get at the
object directly for 'long name' information (not currently available with
this API) just increases the likelihood of a lock.
Possible solutions or work arounds include:
- Adding 'long name' attributes to the keys in this API.
- If long name information is indicated the UDTF could make another pass
at the object directly with an alternative API and risk the lock.
- If long name information is indicated the UDTF could query this
information from the existing system catalogs.
