I've learned that arguing with the SNADS proponents is enlightening.

Personally I find TELNET a 1 to 1 replacement for STRPASTHR. That
was a no brainer. Unless, you are filling in the exact workstation,
or burying in the user id and password thus bypassing the signon, in
STRPASTHR.

The Start TCP/IP TELNET (STRTCPTELN) did eventually [long ago] add the following parameters, so even the bypass signon is available with TELNET just as with Start Pass-Through (STRPASTHR):
• Remote virtual display . . . . . RMTVRTDSP
• Remote user . . . . . . . . . . RMTUSER
• Remote password . . . . . . . . RMTPWD

However like with the other features, even with such enhancements, the TCP/IP interface does not fully eclipse the Start PassThru feature which has an API available:
Start Pass-Through (QPASTRPT)
<http://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/api/content/nl/en-us/ssw_ibm_i_71/apis/qpastrpt.htm>

I did have my horizons broadened a little by the SAVRST... family of
commands. I thought they were sucking up as much space as perhaps
SAV... to save file . FTP . plus the additional space that SNADS uses
to make this fire-and-forget but some patient soul showed me the save
API and how you can intercept and process the data as it is being
saved thus not tying up all that save file space and perhaps even the
fire-and-forget space.

The SAVRST* are built on those same APIs and they do not use SNA/DS:
• Restore from Application (QaneRsta)
• Save to Application (QaneSava)

So I don't buy the argument that old is bad. However, I just still
choose not to use it.

Choice is often a good thing.
