I think there are two "canonical" answers to this, and almost any
date-wrangling questions:

1. Use Alan Campin's iDate (several people mentioned this already).

2. Create a date table containing all the date formats you could
possibly need. It would have one record per date, covering (for good
measure) a few centuries' worth of dates. (This is not an undue
commitment of disk space on today's machines, as it's only 146097
records per 400 years.)

If you're even thinking of creating a new field/column to serve as a
"helper", I would think you're better served just biting the bullet
and making a date table.
