Greetings. Couple of things to point out. Adding Java 7 to an existing
system will have NO effect what so ever. The default JVM for the system
(assuming IBM I 7.1) is Java 6. Unless a program is explicitly
referencing Java 7, it will be just a non used program prodcut option. The
commemt about 'Java Upgrades' I am going to assume you are refereing to
moving from one version of Java to another. Like Java 5 to Java 6. In
that case, yep. Welcome to the world of NOT IBM i. The world of Java and
open source is not guarenteed to be upward compatable. Sure they try to
minimize the changes, but there are often changes in a new version of Java
where methods are deprecated or removed that can cause failures. That is
why applications are certified to run on a specfic Java level. Upgrading
IBM i OS levels, can also cause this, as we need to continue to upgrade
the default as well as support versions of Java for each release. For
example. IBM i 7.2 does not support Java 5 at all.

The Case that Amy is describing will not have any effect on any of the
already running applications.

Vern,

1) I've seen many failures over years following a Java upgrade.
2) Many apps, both IBM and 3rd party, hardcode the version of Java being
used. Thus it is difficult to test a new version of Java.
3) Some of these apps will change Java versions on an i5/OS upgrade, also
hard to test.
4) One must spend many man hours identifying, (DSPJVMJOB, WRKJVMJOB) what
versions of Java are being used before attempting any Java updates.

I have to ask why you say that "Java doesn't play well in the sand box"
- I for one won't agree that I know that - can you say more about this?

If an app needs a certain version of Java, they should know how to specify
which JVM they want - it's up to the app, seems to me, to "play well".

Amy,

I'm in a similar boat, would like to install Java 7, but as we all know,
Java doesn't play well in the sand box, I'm afraid what else might break.
What 3rd party product is requiring Java 7?

Thanks
Paul

Hi all,

I'm looking at installing Java 7 as a requirement for a 3rd Party
product upgrade. Currently everything I run on my system is happy with
Java 6.
Anyone have any issues after installing Java 7? This is an IBM i 7.1
partition.

Thank you,
