Doing all the memory allocation and making a "manual array" (i.e. not using DIM() but using BASED() and manually setting elements via pointer math) may seem simple to you (and it does to me as well) but it is not within the skill set of most RPG programmers.

If RPG can support a large enough array with the standard DIM() keyword, then I don't see why you'd want to do it this way??

Also, when you say 'RPG can only address 16MB of storage', I hope you actually meant that a single variable can only use 16MB of storage, and not that you really think RPG can only address that much storage?!?!

Also, the OP said he needed 50 records of 400 bytes in size... so all of this is purely us chatting... nothing anywhere near 16mb is called for here.
