I love a good old fashioned language war as much as the next programmer,
but I don't think OP was looking to toss out his existing apps and
re-write brand new ones for a new medium.

I'm pacifist! I just used the comparisation RPG/2 <-> ILE RPG <-> Java as an example that everything has it's price.
Original RPG was designed to get most out of very little hardware and an IBM/36, comparable to a an original XT PC was supporting 200 terminals working with an order entry application. But this times are gone, today cpu power and main memory is very cheap and nearly unrestricted available and in these days the problem is to make effective use of all available ressources.

As a conclusion of this the switch from old fashioned RPG to more modern dialects of RPG, the resulting applications will have a bigger footprint than before, but might as well be faster and programmer performance will increase.

Peace!

Dieter
