We've done a lot of slinging money at hardware and that has corrected many
performance issues.

SIGNIFICANTLY! helped our journal performance, (in ways that adding SSD's
had little to no effect).

Very few rewrites for performance. And definely not using more 'modern'
code. Unless you consider
replacing a program that used U/O to the summary file upon every read of
the detail file
with changing the input file to Input Primary and only writing to the
summary file at control break time
more 'modern' code. But cutting millions of U/O operations out cut about
an hour off of the run time.
