I may be having another senior moment, but I must ask, what is the issue with the write protect tab.
We never change any of ours.
If one does get changed, by accident, and the tape is loaded, I believe the save process fails for that volume.
It's been years since we had any issues with the write protect tab.

Rob,

are you saying that instead of having IBM i query the library via it's interface (FC or SAS) you could just query it via the web interface?
I can tell that nowadays it wouldn't work, at least on some libraries,
TS2900 for example uses a non-text based interface, it's a very nice java app where you drag and drop tapes to move them...
But you would not be the only one that would like to have an ssh shell on the library to control it or at least query it.

Think outside the box. If the tape device is a media library why not
consume a webservice? Sure there are hurdles to overcome, like just
determining the host name from the device name, user id and password, etc.
However, it's not like we're trying to create chips with 9 nanometer
carbon threads.

Your comparing two incomparable interfaces again. A tape library vs.
IBM i?
Really?

<snip>
Now if you used the Navigator interface to look at the tapes inside
BRMS then I think you'll see a comparable time against 5250.
</snip>

Leave it up to the web developers from Navigator to figure out a way
to create a much slower interface.
