I realize this is not an answer to the question you're asking, but
it's worth mentioning that it's quite easy to convert from .xls to
.csv these days. (Well, it has been for a while, but it's becoming
more and more common.) That is, it's easy to process .xls (as an IFS
stream file) directly on your IBM i.
