Rick

I agree with Alan & Rob about vendors that might not be all that advanced. It's a shame if this is, in fact, the case.

Of course, there was an alternate interpretation of DFU - Dangerous F@#$%## Utility! One thing about DFU - it often leaves a spooled file with the changes - at least part of the data, IIRC. SQL won't.

A similar caveat - SQL is a vary powerful tool and really does need to be used judiciously. So the basic 3 rules -

1. Backup!
2. Backup!
3. Backup!

Then there is always journaling!

Good luck!

Hi Rob, I know Alan was not being mean. As I explained to him earlier....it
was an attempt to joke a little in regards to his suggestions to my
question. Again, i apologize to Alan just stupid humor....or an attempt on
my part. I take this forum very serious, won't happen again.
Again, thanks for the great suggestions for the data....i just could not
figure out why the vendor is telling my end-user the preferred way of
fixing the data in the file is DFU(??)

Rick,

Alan was not being mean. By 'plain English' he meant sort of like
pseudocode only in even plainer English. For example
I want to change the file MYFILE by just adding one year to MYDATE.
Which is pretty much what you've said. Perhaps Alan is so used to SQL
that he thinks that if you can write this out in plain english that it
would become obvious to you how to do it in SQL. I had to pretend I was
ignorant in SQL in order to see why it wouldn't be obvious. For example,
what if I knew nothing of the UPDATE statement? Or the SET clause? Then
writing it out in 'plain English' isn't quite so obvious that it would be
update myfile set mydate= mydate + 1 year

No slam intended to either you, nor Alan.
Just trying to bridge the gap between you two.

incorrect
date field.
I have not used DFU that much..i know i can change specific records in
a
file via the record number but how can DFU change a date field in
15,000
records uni this file.
