Alan was not being mean. By 'plain English' he meant sort of like
pseudocode only in even plainer English. For example
I want to change the file MYFILE by just adding one year to MYDATE.
Which is pretty much what you've said. Perhaps Alan is so used to SQL
that he thinks that if you can write this out in plain english that it
would become obvious to you how to do it in SQL. I had to pretend I was
ignorant in SQL in order to see why it wouldn't be obvious. For example,
what if I knew nothing of the UPDATE statement? Or the SET clause? Then
writing it out in 'plain English' isn't quite so obvious that it would be
update myfile set mydate= mydate + 1 year

No slam intended to either you, nor Alan.
Just trying to bridge the gap between you two.
