In my case i had forgotten that i was planning on making the 2nd VIOS boot
off the DS3524 so i've no need to virtualize the tape library (I was going
to share the SAS card between the split backplane and the tape library) i
can just keep on moving the SAS card just like the old machine did.But
still it would be nice to be able to present the entire library and not
just the drive. I'll play with that in the lab when i get a sas tape
library.

Current SAS Tape card is $1,000
Current 4GB Fiber card is $ 2,500
Current 8GB Fiber Card is $3,500
Only have a *Guesstimate* on a 24port Fiber SW with 8 active ports
$12,000

So if you need to add the Switch you are taking $13,000+ additional cost
to
go fiber

Sure, adding a switch in there will increase some knowledge needed. But
it will help to reduce the complexity of having to flop devices around,
varying on/off, etc.

Rob, i believe you did but you were talking about NPIV IIRC. In this
case
we are both asking about SAS ports which are not as nice as FC (Worst
part?
in my case the machine HAS 2 DualPort 8G HBAs but no FC switch so i cant
do
NPIV even if the tape library had FC).

When hosting IBM i on IBM i I can place the SAS physical adapter in
the
Host and using vSCSI adatpers I can setup it up and all you have to do
is
Vary the Drive Off in 1 partition and Vary on in the other. I have
done
this with a single drive on a single card.
Works Great and no HMC to mess with to move the tape drive.

With Power8 unless you buy something bigger than an 8core you have
very
limited cards slots. I would really like to use a single SAS card with
multiple ports in different partitions at the same time. Can this be
done
in VIOS and/or IBM I?

Example1: SAS Tape Card assigned to VIOS and Use Port1 for IBM i
Partition
A while using Port 2 for IBM i Partition B?

Example2: Same as #1 but IBM i is the Host?
