FWIW:I _think_ I figured out what was causing the "authentication refused: bad ownership or modes for file" error.
I changed the unix permissions on my home directory to remove group write, and all group & public authorities on the .ssh directory and the authorized_keys file.
chmod g-w /home/myuserid
chmod 700 /home/myuserid/.ssh
chmod 600 /home/myuserid/.ssh/authorized_keys
