Samba is Windows file sharing for Linux..

Netserver / QNTC is Windows file sharing for IBM i.

AFAIK, a Linux box with Samba has always worked with Netserver / QNTC.

My understanding is that the 7.2 Samba support replaces the IBM
Netserver/QNTC code with Samba to provide better (more current) support of
Windows file sharing.

NFS has always and is still probably a better choice for IBM i <-- -->
Linux.

LOL - but at least they finally gave it to you, man!!

It's not clear to me whether this support is server-only - so that Linux
clients can use NetServer - so I'm not sure if Samba is usable in mounting
to something outside the IFS - in other words, can the IBM i be a Samba
client yet?

Hmmm!

You can do CPY to an NFS or QTNC (Netbios share) if you have the correct
permissions.

We have always found copying to an NFS share to be much more stable.

In regards to the Samba support in V7R2, first you need V7R2 :-)

Then you need someone at IBM to be able to give you instructions on how
to use it.

I wasn't able to get good test instructions from the folks at IBM so my
testing has been waylaid since I'm not a Unix super-expert :-)
