True, the SCSI cards would lose their minds and need to be booted. If they
were controlled by an IOP then the IOP had to reboot as well. If that IOP
controlled disk, just IPL the box. I'm doubting that situation exists here
since Paul tends to have newer equipment that most likely does not have
IOPs.

Jim has a point there.

Another thing is that there are some brain cells in the wayback machine
telling me that, on occasion, I had to 'ipl' the card(s) {using SST} going
to the tape drive(s) upon replacement. Something tells me that was mainly
with SCSI attached 3581's with LTO 1 drives.

What Rob is trying to say is we are unaware of any way to save/restore the
library configuration. Be ready to hand configure the new one if it comes
to that. There was a way on the big 3594s to save the config and update
it
but I don't know if that option exists on the smaller libraries.

As to firmware, while I agree being on the latest version is good, the
reality is you should match what you have today until you verify that
after
replacement it works. Then take the time to update it and re-verify it
works. That way if there's a problem you won't be fighting multiple
change
modalities.

I would download:
latest library firmware
latest drive firmware
and be prepared to update those. IBM normally loads up replacement
libraries and drives with the latest firmware. However, if they've been
on
the shelf too long they may get dated.
You may want to step through the configuration manually and be prepared to
reenter it all. IP addresses and all. You do have remote access to it
via
a web browser, right? Screen shots to Power Point will work quite well.

CE coming on site to replace the entire library, if he can't get the

You rolled the UPS into the elevator with all the batteries in it and now
it's out of range? :-) [Yes seen it done....]

You didn't say how big your 3573 is but it would appear that it's 'lost'
in the vertical dimension. So a sensor failure or dust in there or loose
wire. In any case most likely the repair guy is your best bet here.
