RE: Navigator for i vrs. System i Navigator

fixed

The bigger question, which is why I haven't even bothered using it since they changed it, is why isn't it https by default? I should never have to key my credentials without them being encrypted. (Then again, I can't get into BRMS configuration in System i Navigator when I have the connection encrypted.)

It used to be you just used one port for http and another for https, and everything else was the same. When they came out with all the new stuff, the entry page for https stopped working. If you knew the links and ports, you could get where you needed, but not by simply clicking.

Today, I get nothing on port 2001, but I haven't tried it in a while. Tested with FF 29.0.1, Chrome 34, and IE 11. Maybe after I install PTFs next weekend I'll try again. Looks like I'm still on 7.1 TR6.

I show all those ports listening in NETSTAT *CNN. I have active HTTP jobs ADMIN, ADMIN1, ADMIN2, ADMIN3, ADMIN4.

For lack of anything else, (I just tried the same on my box with no issue) look to see if all the ADMIN instances are running. There should be three "ADMIN" then Admin1...Admin4. If they are not healthy, check the java levels on the box to be sure all of them are loaded.

Netstat *cnn (then F14) will show if the servers are listening on the appropriate ports, usually 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2016 and 2017. If not something else is not right.

Stabbing at the dark right now.

Charles,

FF V29.0.1. I get connected but then when I click on any link to see work management, printer output, etc - all I get is a blank page with a spinning circle.

What version of FF?

I'm running v29

Seems to work better than Chrome 34, per some PM's from IBM...they are
aware of issues with Chrome.

I get decent response on a 515 running 7.1TR7, active jobs comes up in
15s or so...

I am seeing several articles touting the benefits of Navigator for i
browser based management over the windows based System i Navigator.

I have tried several times to use the browser based version, and I
am seeing VERY long response times.

For example in the work management section: Browser - I click on the
active
jobs. This opens a tab for active jobs. It spins and the elapsed
time shows 15 minutes, but has yet to give me a display of active jobs.

Try the same thing in windows based version and I get almost instant
response list of active jobs.

Same thing with almost all of the work management stuff. Job
Queues, Output Queues, detail in QINTER or another subsystem.

Same thing with sub options of Basic Operations. Long wait times to
get
no
response.

Try the same thing in MS Internet Explorer:

I finally get some response, so something is broken with FF. I don't
know about Chrome, but last time I tried to use it I got the same
thing
as FF.

This seems to me to be a lot less reliable than the windows client,
as
IBM
can't control when a browser entity breaks functionality. Response
time still not great but might be acceptable. Windows client is
better, green screen is best response.

Any thoughts on how to get better browser response time?

Can we make FF work or must we wait on IBM and/or Mozilla?

With FF I can set an exception for the site security. How can we
make
that
fix permanent so any browser will not balk at the connection?

How is the 7.2 version of the same thing? Is it better? I know
that monitoring has been delivered there. That piece has in part,
kept me
from
going to the browser.

I am not yet sold on the browser as a management tool for i.
