Could not say for sure why it is a bad idea. I know the community was back and forth in the 80's and early 90's on the practice.

We adopted here for a while then a new boss said NO!.. So we started embedding SQL.

Unless the keys don't already exist in another logical, there's no
additional overhead beyond a few bytes of disk.
