newer controllers (don't know if the i controllers do it) have learn cycles
so that the system can check if the battery is OK or not. lower end
controllers still make you swap the batteries based on age...

I shake my head in disgust every time I'm forced to replace one of these.

This is still one of the dumbest design decisions ever made by IBM and I
get reminded of it every year :-)

I have Dell Servers that are 4+ years old with no cache battery issues
ever on the disk controllers.

Has this been improved on the newer equipment ?

So I'm looking for that date in the future when Richard posts: "My power
blipped for just a second and the system crashed. When i went to bring it
up, it complains that it needs to clear the ASP. What happened??"

FWIW.

Probably not recommended practice but.............

I had a cache battery go out that was less than a year old or so it
seemed.

Brought down the system, removed battery for 2 minutes, put it back in
and it's running fine.

Not totally convinced these batteries need replacement every year :-)

Did you do a WRKDSKSTS
