Just looking for a better approach, if there is one.

An "enterprise server bus" architecture would enable RPG and .Net programs to perform request / response processing and pass data back and forth asynchronously. The ESB guarantees message delivery and response even when the RPG program or .Net program might be off-line or unavailable for whatever reason.

It really wasn't clear to me whether an ESB architecture might help in your case. But it sounded borderline, so I decided to mention it. We use it for exchanging data between 3rd parties.
