The real expense is not the replacement tape drive or the on going
maintenance of the old drive. That is a no brainer. (New drive may be
paid for in less than a year of maintenance savings.) The real expense is
replacing all of the old tapes, and if you have long term retention needs,
copying the old tapes to the new format. Time is expensive, tapes can be
expensive.

Get a newer tape drive that a current CE may have had some training on?
That was withdrawn from marketing in April of 2006. IDK what the
maintenance would be on a new tape drive versus that old one. You could
be paying more for crappy maintenance on old stuff.
We replaced our 3590's with LTO many moons ago.

Hey, I know money is a real factor here, but I am just tossing out an
option.
