Isn't this where someone mentions that REXX might be more suitable than CL for this sort of thing?

way, then ask Alan Campin for a stored procedure to put the output of said
select into a data area. Then you can retrieve that. Wait, how would you
execute said procedure from CL? RUNSQLSTM? QSH?

You might find it easier to

CALL RPGDATEPGM PARM(&GETTHEFRIGGINGDATE)

And RPGDATEPGM would execute the select and pass the result back as a
parameter.
