I was under the impression that the IBM i SNDDST command was NOT able to
"relay" through an external SMTP server such as Exchange, so I kind of
doubt that Exchange ever "touched" the outgoing mail.

I said incorrect as it's easy for IBM i to relay mail out another server
rather than deliver mail itself.

look at the MAILROUTER and FIREWALL (and in 6.1+ the FWDMAILHUB) parms of
the CHGSMTPA command..

I'm starting a new thread because configuring the SMTP as a relay is only
a tangent to Paul's text message concerns. I looked at the SMTP properties
in System i Navigator and could not figure out how to set up the server as
a "relay".

Could you share how to do it?

I'm aware of various email interfaces that enable folks to bypass the IBM
i SMTP server altogether, and relay at will, but how do you configure IBM i
SMTP to relay?

Thanks,
