I feel kind of silly for not remembering this, because I wrote a note
to myself (in the form of a text file where I keep various tips,
tricks, and tidbits regarding encodings on the i) with this very
command (well, OK, I had a different value for the OBJ parameter).

John, maybe I can get some Python in my future so I don't
get bit by these crazy bytes . . . back to work now

If you can get the standard IBM commands to meet your requirements,
that's usually the shortest path to a solution, and no one can fault
you for pursuing that route. But if you get a chance to try Python,
I'm confident you'll be glad you did.
