That's entirely possible, but I remember (at least I think I remember) reading something similar in SQL and thinking to myself - I have to remember that.

Think you might be getting RPG's %subst confused with SQL...

in RPG %subst() can be on either side of the equals...

%subst(fullfield:5:1) = 'A';
