I noticed that call to IBM. I figured either he did have maintenance, or
was paying through the nose because they were toast. Can you not even
call IBM on a T&M basis if you do not have maintenance?

He made no mention of vendor dependencies. None. To me it sounded like
"hey we found this shipment of 6.1 gathering dust, it will help when we
upgrade to newer hardware and it's got some cool stuff - let's put it on".

7.1's been out for a coon's age. You really stick with a vendor's product
who doesn't yet have a 7.1 version? Wow. I switched from a number of
vendors when they were dragging their feet going to 6.1. Got tired of
paying maintenance money to a vendor who put none of that money into the
product and used it all solely to pay off their latest leveraged buy out.

Agree on the financial implications of HMC versus LAN console. It IS a
healthy bite. That's why I didn't poo-poo lan console.
