Again, thanks for your feedback, Sue. Late last night I came across IBM documentation for installing 5886 disk enclosures, including SAS cabling instructions and other references indicating support for IBM i on Power. So that appears to be a viable option. There were also references in ML list archives which were helpful.

Yes, it does.  Feature EJ01 for the POWER7 720 and 740 systems does
activate the SAS port on the back of the CEC.
