figured it out...

I needed to make my second parm a string:
TIMESTAMPDIFF(8, CHAR(
TIMESTAMP_FORMAT(p2.yymmdd concat p2.time ,'YYMMDDHH24MISS') -
TIMESTAMP_FORMAT(p1.yymmdd concat p1.time ,'YYMMDDHH24MISS'))) as
elapsed_time
