The best way is to use Ops Navigator to run Visual Explain on the SQL
Statement and see what it recommends. You can also turn on debug and get
more detailed messages in the job log. Visual Explain is the best. You
might also check the Index Adviser in Ops Nav to see if it is building any
indexes when you run the SQL statement.
I remember that, from the database optimization class I took at IBM
Rochester, some years ago. Although, dusting off the workbook from that
class, I can't even remember how to get to Visual Explain, assuming I
even *can* get to it on *our* box. (And the actual situation is on a
customer box, for which we only have TN5250 access.)
I was able to open something called "System i Navigator" on our box (and
could probably model the situation there), but is that even the same
thing? I don't see anything that looks like a path to Visual Explain.
