Yes the two NWSD's do need to be varied on. They provide the disk and tape so you can see why. :-)

If you intend to IPL from Tape then yes the tape drive must be varied OFF on the host or the guest cannot use it.
If you intend to IPL from optical then it must be varied on but of course it needs a LIC CD/DVD or media containing a SAVSYS in order for the system to IPL.

Verified that the settings for this lpar are D mode IPL.
Tried to start it using Activate Profile and it died with B2004158.
Shut it down immediately. Varied on NWSD's MAIL1 and MAIL1TO. Tried
again. Same error. Hmm, I wonder if loading a disc into the optical
drive will make a difference? :-)
Do I need to vary off tape/opt on GDIHQ first?
