Yes, this is what I've been reading about. Since we are also short of bus/card space for Ethernet NICs this sounds like a solution to replace our current v5r4 redundant TCP NICs.

Minor technical correction: There is no v7.1r3. It's IBM i 7.1 with Technology Refresh (TR) 3. [Currently IBM is shipping TR5. ]

Delivered in TR3 is the ability to bridge an external (physical) LAN to an internal (Virtual) LAN. This allows any number of partitions on the Virtual Lan to access the physical LAN across this bridge. Configuring this is very easy and overhead seems to be very very small. Redundancy can be configured and with a little extra effort 802.1Q VLANs can also be supported.

I have configured this many times already and have it in production in several locations.

Thanks, but problem is to few slots so for all LPARs to have their own
fiber cards.
No plans to run VIOS.

Does your enterprise have a fiber switch? If so, I recommend a second
fiber card and routing them both through a switch to that tape drive.
We run multiple lpars off of one tape library in one city and the
other lpars in a different city off of one other library. Both use a switch.

Failing that, can you split that by virtualizing the connection? We
do that with some lan connections but we've not tried it with fiber
connections.
