I agree with you Paul. But Luis point was that there are actually some
differences in the compilers. Occasionally IBM will issue a ptf that says
a recompile is recommended. Normally to take advantage of some new
feature.

I understand Luis point but wouldn't do this.

Now, different shops define "production" differently. For example, we are
a manufacturer. Our production machine is used to run ERP (and lots of
other stuff). Having the tools on there is a carry over from the days of
a previous package whose general ledger report writer generated and
compiled RPG on the fly. I'd like to remove the tools from that. We have
several other production lpars who run only Domino. They have no tools.
A software house may define production as the one they spin off code for
distribution to customers. They may feel a need to have the tools on that
box. I don't see it, but they might. Then again, I keep all my boxes at
7.1. They may not. And I'll stop there to avoid going off on a tangent.
