Paul,

BRMS puts an expiration on each file. It will write over expired files.
It never initializes a tape unless you manually do that. BRMS also tells
you which tapes to pull back from Iron Mountain (and you can bet they're
expired) to insert into your tape library for backup. This isn't the
issue. Nice thought though.
