AFAIK, Edit codes in the field definition have not effect on how numeric
data is stored.

You could use a SQL CREATE TABLE statement and modify the desired field to
conform to your needs. Something like:

*CREATE TABLE MYLIB/NEWFILE AS(*
* SELECT FIELD1, FIELD2, CAST(NUMFIELD AS VARCHAR(15)) AS CHAR_FIELD*
* FROM MYLIB/OLDFILE) WITH DATA ;*
