If you list all of your fields instead of using * you can then substitute in 'X' for the clientnumber field in your select statement:
Insert into myfile
Select 'x', clientaddress, clientstate from myotherfile where clientnumber = 'n'
With 'x' in the same position in the list of fields as clientnumber is in myfile.

insert into myfile
select *from myotherfile where clientnumber = 'n'
problem is, I want to set the clientnumber that is written to myfile to 'x'.
