We have worked with the Jaguar/JagXTreme line from Mettler/Toledo (outdated, now) and the Rice Lake 920i line of scales.

The Mettler/Toledo line has built-in support for TCP/IP, we we've written programs that run on the scale (JagBasic) that read the scale input, and then can connect (with sockets) to RPG programs and send the data to them.

The Rice Lake line does not have TCP/IP built-in, but works with Lantronix adapter cards. These cards attach to an RS-232 port on the scale, and convert the RS232 data to a TCP connection. An RPG program can connect to the Lantronix board via TCP and send/receive data from the scale.

I'm sure there are other scales from other manufacturers that will work in the same way. In all cases, we've written custom software to interface with them.

What is required to pipe data from a package scale into a 5250

There is a (Toledo, I believe) scale with a USB connection. Is
some specialized software required?

TIA for any suggestions.
