Pete,

I don't have encryption on this old V5R1 box, but I have often wondered
about backup encryption. Encryption, as I understand it (never done it)
requires a key to both encrypt and decrypt.

If the tape is encrypted using a software key, and the tape was taken to
another machine, I imagine that it would be necessary to add this key on the
new machine in order to read the tape. Right? If so, not trivial, but not
too difficult.

But, if the tape is encrypted using a hardware method, just how is that tape
used at another site (say, a hot site for DR)?

Sorry for the silly questions, but these have always puzzled me even though
I understand the reasons for data encryption.

BRMS has an OPTIONAL software encryption component, it will be much slower
than hardware encryption.

Hello group,
I've not used BRMS in many years and I have a question. I've been
told that BRMS does encryption for backups. Is this true, and if so, does
it do it through the software or just control the encryption to the tape
drive that would do it?

thanks, Larry
