I'm not familiar with Tomcat, but normally with Java applications, the
system's administrator (or programmer, sometimes) would set the
JAVA_HOME environment variable to tell applications where the JVM is
located. Your software could then use this variable to determine the
location of the Java binaries, if needed.

Actually, *we* set the *job-level* JAVA_HOME to the Java 6, since the version of Tomcat we use requires it.

But given that we can simply check a relative few known locations, what would be the best way, without side effects, to check for the existence of a particular IFS directory in a CL program?

And does anybody know what the difference is between
/qopensys/QIBM/ProdData/JavaVM/jdk60/32bit
and
/qopensys/QIBM/ProdData/JavaVM/jdk626/32bit

???
