Rob, so you don't have to physically go to the back of the rack and power up your disk units, etc.?

Go to
ttps://yourhmc/hmc/connect
og in as hscroot
lick on "Systems Management". Expand "Servers". Put a check mark next
o your server. At the bottom expand Operations. Select Power On or
ctivate or whatever the terminology is.
If you go to HMC Management and, click at the top, on HMC Version, what do
ou have for version and release?

hanks Rob. What's the steps on the HMC to complete the power on and is
here any way to do it by activating a partition?

ssuming all your tape drives and disk drives are plugged into the rack
th your hardware running IBM i then yes you could have powered it all up
om the HMC. And you could have accessed your HMC remotely from home,
ile in your PJ's, and have done so.
've powered off all three lpars on one rack, IPLed the rack to put on
rmware, brought the lpars back up. Got into their system consoles, etc.
nd not have been in the same city.

Folks, we lost power last night and when it was restored I had to
nually power on our disk units and tape drives, etc. Could I have
wered up the HMC first and then used the HMC to power them up?
anks for the info, Frank

've been in your shoes - actually much worse - on backlevel hmc and
mware. Had to do multiple staggers. I had to stagger from V5something
HMC to V7something because V7 offers kick butt remote control with
ular browsers and no pc software required.
C code can be upgraded midday with no downtime of your IBM Power
tform. Actually upgrading the HMC controlling TWO Power 6's as I type
s.
tually, I recommend upgrading your HMC NOT at the same time as you're
rading firmware. You don't want your console down when you're IPLing
r Power platform.

ou may want to consider stepping up on all three:
1 to i7.1
3.3.0.1 to V7R7.4
20 to EM350
these last two - you're getting down towards a pinch off of support.
're already at the point where you have to stagger upgrades.
ps://www14.software.ibm.com/webapp/set2/sas/f/power5cm3/emtablep6.html
st step: Upgrade your HMC from V7R3.3 to V7R3.5
ond step: Upgrade your firmware from EM320 to EM350
rd step: Upgrade your HMC from V7R3.5 to V7R7.4
aying current on firmware will:
nsure you can put on hardware that needs it with less downtime at the
e you need it catching up on firmware
e ready for OS upgrades which may require new firmware
f your HMC fries and IBM has to air you a new one preloaded at a higher
vel of HMC code you're ready to go.
ake advantage of fixes and security patches
aying current on HMC code will:
llow you to use newer browsers which may poorly render prior levels of
code!
et the best of experiences with remote connections and what not
llow you to use latest firmware (see above)
f your power 6 suffers catastrophic hardware loss and needs replacing
'll have a hmc ready to go at the latest firmware level.
ven if just your FSP needs replacing it may come preloaded at newer
mware.
ake advantage of fixes and security patches.

ob, we're at V6R1 of the OS and for HMC we're at V7R3.3.0.1 and
20_076. I think that s/b ok. Thanks

w much time have you got?
st, ensure that your HMC is running a level of HMC code compatible with
r power system's firmware. Some people do a big no-no on HMC managed
ines and configure firmware upgrades to come from the ptf's applied to
partition. The problem with that is your firmware can get so
aded that your HMC can no longer manage it. Bringing the system up
scratch after a power outage is not the time to discover that.
s://www14.software.ibm.com/webapp/set2/sas/f/power5cm/supportedcode.html
n power off all partitions using your normal steps, with the last being
DWNSYS RESTART(*NO), with other appropriate options
n use the HMC to power off the 'system' itself.
power off the HMC.
n power is restored:
our UPS got drained, wait until that builds up a little reserve.
r up your HMC.
your HMC to power up the 'system'.
the system is ready, use your HMC to bring up your lpars. Bring up
ed lpar's before bringing up any guest lpars.

ect: Power Outage Checklist?
by: midrange-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx
Folks, we've got a planned power outage coming up and I'm wondering
the correct steps would be to power down and then start up after the
r is out?
t about the HMC, any specifics on how to shut that down, or is that
necessary? What about startup too, will power be restored to the HMC
iSeries and provide screen access to both?
on't think we've ever lost power in our data center before.
nks, Frank
