Hmmm, that message came just before I sent my last reply about using "Work with Media Library Status" (WRKMLBSTS) command. I recall that the Tape *DEVD must be varied-off first, and then the MLB that is defined on that same tape Resource Name (RSRCNAME) [as the tape drive] can be varied-on. The 1=Vary on _and_ 2=Vary off on the WRKMLBSTS refer to the MLB; of course.
