we have it set up to Sequential/autoload/[not]Loop. so once the first
tape is loaded we are fine...

I don't need all the features like random retrieval, or passing the
tape id.

I can recall little about my dealings with other tape libraries with similar requirements to use as a sophisticated\extended-function tape device, but I do recall heavily relying on a "Work with" command, presumably WRKMLBSTS [maybe 4=Allocate resource could assist?], from: GO CMDMLB
