Brian,

What are your project requirements? Realtime or full data periodically or what?.

Are you having to send data, commands back to the PLC?
That should drive your decision.

Why is it that the multitude of suggestions are all to put another box/OS in
between?
Everything inbetween will have it's own maintenance requirements, it's own
schedule.

And the PLC device will have it's own up & down. Is there a requirement for the
PLC to offload it's data immediately?
The i is extremely good at communicating to things like this.

Obviously it would be good to talk to someone who has done this interface before

(you certainly are not the 1st).

<based on your desc...>
The mention of triggers indicates it may be capable of placing the data into
your system

and the trigger event will give you an event to act upon that data. The Database
module
"might be" what goes in your system for it to update.
Transport & port are common terms for the communication setup part.
Sounds like a fun project for you.

Thanks.

We found a spot to put in the information, but one of the parameters it requires
is a port number.  What would be the port number to access  the AS400
databases?  I've never had to enter that before, so it's new to me.

Looks like the QJ71MES96 MES Interface Module User's Manual might help.
http://www.meau.com/eprise/main/PSG/iQ-Q/MES.html. Looks like you have to
purchase it though.

Here's a

Hi All,

One of our assembly divisions recently acquired a Mitsubishi PLC module that
they would like to connect to our AS400.  They sent me the manual and it is an
absolute nightmare to try and understand how the two systems are supposed to
communicate.  There's a lot of talk on triggers, local transports, etc., etc.
It looks like a really powerful system, but I am having a very hard time
interpreting what needs to be done from the manual.

The model number of the interface they purchased is QJ71MES96IT.  They also
purchased the transport/database module part number MESITTRNSDB2 to compliment
the MES IT interface.

So my question is (and yes, it is a very broad question as I really do not have
a starting point) - how do I get the data from the PLC into an AS400 table?
Does anyone have any experience with this module that can help me understand
how this is accomplished?

Any ideas, or resources I might be able to access to help me understand?

Thankee-sai!
