I'd stick with the API's versus
- DSPDIRE to an outfile
- hacking into system supplied files
or you may be in for unpleasant surprises when you upgrade your OS.

Granted, if you use SQL instead of RLA in RPG to access the files you'll
have less of a chance of record level checks. Then again, who's to say
that IBM wouldn't change from using a DB2 file to a stream file or
whatever?
