It wants to clear the ASP because the numerous incongruencies lead it
to believe faulty. Dont blame it. It wasnt meant to be tinkered in
this way.
You could clear the ASP, stop the parity and reclaim cache, that way
the controller would be virgin and if you re-image the drives it
should work (after a LONG time)...

Best regards,

Not so lucky this time. I used the exact same procedure I used last
time I had to restore the disks from the image files. I have to IPL to
DST from the CD, and it sits at C6004508 for a half hour. When I
finally get to DST, all the drives show up, but some of the serial
numbers have the first two digits '00', and all say 'DPY/Unknown'.
So, let's try and 'Reclaim IOP Cache Storage'.
Now, all the drives show up, just like they did before, with the
proper serial numbers and the proper status. But I'm stuck again. This
time, after it re-IPLs to DST (NOT from the CD, but from the disks),
it wants to 'Reclaim IOP Cache Storage' again. Which complains,
because it WANTS TO CLEAR THE ASP.
I don't think so.
That would be like having your motherboard in your PC die, so you buy
a new motherboard, and when you boot the system up it forces you to
reformat the hard drive.
There is nothing wrong with the data in these disks, the thing is just
pissed because I'm trying to force it to work.
Oh, I'll make it work. And I'm not clearing the ASP either.

Well, there's still a bit of work to do. I have to deal with the
failing load source disk. I have two good spare drives, so this is
what I attempted:

1. Install spare drive and IPL to DST
2. Format the spare drive
3. Copy the load source disk data to the spare
4. Power down
5. Remove the failing load source drive, and install the spare in it's
place
6. Attempt to IPL

#6 fails. The machine is stuck in an endless loop of dumping main
storage and re-IPLing. Crap. Time to wipe the disks and restore again.

You know that with what you have just learned, you could make some big
bucks as a consultant when some old 620/720 et al kicks the bucket
right? i have done at least 3 or 4 reloads on machines that the owners
foolishly let 2 drives die on the raid...

Best regards and keep tinkering!

Well, that worked. Sort of. Here's what happened today:

I restored all seven disks from the original image files I created
when I first got the system, before it was powered up. B M IPL failed
with a 27419022. Tried a D M IPL - stays at C6004508 for almost an
hour. Get into DST, there are only 6 drives showing. Where did the
missing drive go?
Shut down, pulled the drive that wasn't showing up. Over to the PC it
goes. There isn't anything wrong with it. Back into the 720 it goes,
for another attempt.
D M IPL goes OK, not stuck at C6004508. Get into DST, all drives are
present. Time for the real test - can I do a B M IPL, like I did when
I first go the thing?
The B M IPL completed OK, I can sign in to DST with '22222222'.
Time to hack the DST profile again so I can get my QSECOFR back....

Such is the life of the one who is low-level hacking. Be glad you are
doing it for sport. System restores on those old machines take a long
time. Nothing like starting RAID5 on a 14x141Gb set... 12Hs watching
percentiles go by.
If you make it work, i would back up the system keys (dsplickey
*print) just in case it breaks again.

Best of Luck!

I_BASE_01 V5R3M0 seems to work - it IPLs from the CD-ROM drive just

BTW, this is V5R3

beyond" as I suspect probably is the case.
