Actually it sounds like a DNS issue. If my memory servers me, all devices are on the same subnet. You may not have an internal DNS entry. The other issue that I have seen is duplicate ip address. Linux based systems such as the Mac have a real problem yet windows appears to not care. The last thing to check is the subnet mask on the i and Mac

The really weird part is that I have an Apache HTTP instance and a
Tomcat instance on the Windows server I run as well as a Tomcat instance

the laptop, all using internal addresses but I CANNOT hit the internal
address for the HTTP and Tomcat server on the IBM i. In fact, trace
route can't find the host. That pretty much indicates a routing issue
(I think) with the i. The default gateway on the *DFTROUTE points back
to the internal address on the firewall which is where it should point
in order to get to the Internet.
It is pretty bizarre and must have something to do with the way routing
works on the Mac (?). Somehow, it is having trouble seeing the i but no
trouble seeing any Windows or Linux box.
