Thanks, I finally got the time to follow that link.

Thanks; that's amusing. To summarize: IBM is now (only recently) embracing
the CONNECT BY clause for recursion. The amusing part is that Oracle has
been supporting the CONNECT BY clause for a few years, and not until
recently (11g R2) did it allow the recursive CTE. Oracle users seem
ecstatic to learn that recursive CTE is at hand.

I don't know... just struck me as funny.

But as I mentioned before, we're at V5R3 and neither the recursive WITH
clause nor CONNECT BY will do me any good.

This was just published this morning. It seems to address your issue.

If I followed this closely enough, and understand what you have, every
employee is in a file, and has a 'pointer' to his or her boss. And now
you need to point the UberBosses to a board member.

Could you just add the board members to the file, and point the
UberBosses to them? And flag the 'my boss' field for the board members
as *TOP or something like that?

You could then twist the 'BoardMembers' file around, and make it a
logical over the employee file selecting only those entries with *TOP...

Or have I missed something important?
