For that matter, since the OP's ultimate goal is for the data to be
read by Excel, another choice would be to go whole hog and use Scott's
POI-wrapping stuff to generate the Excel file directly.

There are other Excel options, including third-party wrappers to
Scott's POI wrapper, such as

And, of course, there is my favorite: iSeries Python and the
third-party xlwt package. (In my opinion, this is much easier to set
up from scratch and use than any RPG/Java solution, plus you then have
Python, which is a worthy addition to any IT tool set.)
