Enterprise Extender is very unlikely to cause any troubles. Troubles are usually associated with systems that still run SNADS (an SNA animal) but since you don't EE I highly doubt your running SNADS.

The product is free from IBM with IBM i, and is on your distribution disks.

Requires a couple of small changes to the Network attributes, (which will cause an IPL to put it in place) and two controllers and a device on both sides of the communications. Larry has a way cool CL program that configures and starts it all up. Simple but very effective.
