Wikipedia has an article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hayes_command_set) that describes the commands that most recent modems can understand. The example session shows what information passes back and forth to initiate the call to the service. Once connected, what you need to do depends on what the paging service requires or can accept.

Usually the 'dialing string,' (the ATDT19085551212) is stuffed into the iSeries' controller description-- the system dials automatically when your program varies the line+ controller *ON. Your program then gets control once the connection has been established. (Boy-- this brings back memories!)

You really need to look for a pre-written communication program. Otherwise, you'll have to handle all of the messages back and forth to the service provider yourself. It's not a complicated program to write, but there are a lot of possible messages that get sent back and forth, and your program needs to be able to accept all of the possibilities and handle them. Some you can just acknowledge and go on; others will require some action on your part.

Good point.

Does anyone have an example program or someplace I can learn what I need to
send to a modem to be able to send a page??

Sounds like it could be a bit of a learning curve here for me.
