The FMTDTA aka the old "S/34 - S/36" sort utility still exists today and I believe it is a standard component of the OS.

In the old days flat files was all we had and FMTDTA worked just fine.

One feature is that you can create a sorted output file with only the RRN of the original file could be neat for large volumes of data.
