Does anybody have any idea what could cause that?

A defect.? What are the full message details including the release?

Apparently that is the symptom ["to", not "from", for an exception]: msgMCH3601 T/QSQCLI Tm/SQLED Tp/SQLExecDirect stmt/12161

There are two very recent APARs [one presumably sysrouted from the first reported-release to the other] with the "same" symptom although significantly different statement number [but the APAR also does not state what release the text represents]:
SE50301 v6r1
SE50590 v7r1
